In this exclusive interview, I sat down with one of our colleagues, John Aluko, who recently marked an incredible milestone of a decade with Transcorp. His journey, filled with challenges and triumphs, shows the spirit of resilience, dedication, and commitment to Transcorp’s mission. Read his inspirational story, where he reflects on his favourite memories, lessons learned, and his vision for the future.
Q: How did your journey at Transcorp begin?
A: When I joined Transcorp a decade ago, I remember that the job description wasn’t entirely clear. My initial understanding was that I would be working at the head office. Little did I know that I would be supporting the various subsidiaries. At that time, it was just THP, THC, and TPL. Shortly after I joined, a crisis unfolded in Calabar when the IT Manager there had a dispute with the management, resulting in the locking of their systems and applications. All attempts to reach the IT Manager went unanswered, leading the operations into chaos. It was a challenge, but one I embraced wholeheartedly, as I’ve always enjoyed challenges. Luckily, I was able to resolve the issue and get everything back online.
Q: In your 10 years at Transcorp, what would you say has been your favourite memory?
A: My most cherished memory so far at Transcorp has to be when I had the opportunity to attend a training program in India. Securing approval for such an international training was not something I thought was possible for my level, so I decided to fund it myself and planned to use my leave days. Two days before my scheduled departure, I met with Emmanuel Nnorom (ENN), our President/GCEO at the time, to inform him about my leave. To my surprise, ENN inquired about the training and wondered why I hadn’t approached management for support. I explained the situation, explaining that the local training programs I had requested had yet to be approved so reaching out to management for this was a long shot. After our conversation, he wished me good luck and I left his office. Less than 5 minutes later, the GCFO contacted me, revealing that ENN had instructed him to provide me with $2,500 in support. It is still one of my fondest memories at Transcorp today because it wasn’t just about the money; it was the thought and belief in my growth that truly touched me.
Q: Why 10 Years?
A: I genuinely enjoy the work I do at Transcorp, and despite receiving tempting offers elsewhere, my inner peace is invaluable to me. While there have been moments of pressure, I have consistently found that peace within Transcorp’s dynamic environment. Of course, there are other reasons, but the main reason is because of the peace I have found here.
Q: Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?
A: In the next decade, I see myself owning and running my company.
Q: Any advice to your fellow Humans of Transcorp?
A: In life, the most precious commodity is peace of mind. Money is undoubtedly important, but it should never come at the expense of your inner peace. While no place is perfect, choose to remain where you can face any challenge head-on and maintain your peace.
